Daal (split orange lentils, "masoor")

 

Ingredients

1 cup orange lentils

3-4 cups water

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 ts red pepper

1/4 ts turmeric

2 cooking spoons of oil or butter

1/2 tsp cumin

1 onion chopped

2 -3 cloves garlic

Directions

Put first five ingredients a pot all together and bring to boil; After first boil, simmer on low for at least 1 hour, until soft.

In a frypan, add oil (2 cooking spoons) or butter.

When oil is very hot, add cumin, and onions and cook until tender and translucent but not browned; add garlic, cook until soft. Add to top of cooked daal.

NOTES:

These recipes (Keema and Daal) my mom taught me before I got married (almost 20 years ago!), which are still staples in our household and for any Pakistani family.  Serve with basmati rice or naan. Enjoy!
